Advice On Team To Tryout For...
Tryouts will be in March 2012, here is some advice on which team may be best for your daughter to tryout for. This is not one-size fits all advice, as each player is different, but at least the points below can give you an idea of which team is best for your daughter.
1) Playing Up: If you are a rising 7th-9th grader, do not mistake playing up on a junior / senior travel team as the same playing up on a normal AAU / Club Team. The competition level alone inside your team is tough just to get playing time. Your 7th-9th grade daughter may have to compete against rising 11th-12th graders who are already identified by college coaches as Division I Prospects. We want your daughters to learn how to compete for their playing time, but asking a 7th-9th grader to out perform a DI College Prospect in the 11th-12th grade is, in most cases, unreasonable, and that's just within the team. She will then have to be able to compete against opponents that may field teams with multiple DI Players. If you are ok with the possibility of your daughter having to sit and learn for a season playing up on a team that is 2-3-4 ages older than she is, then you may want to look at the junior / senior team. There is a certain mental expectation needed not to just only tryout for the junior / senior team, but to handle (the right way) being on this team from March - October.
2) Playing On Age or One Year Up: Is strongly encouraged. You want your daughter to be evaluated by college coaches in the best light against players that are close to the same graduating class. The mental and physical grind of a season is tough enough playing on age, and you don't want to break their confidence early on in this college-exposure process. This comes to a situation where you stop worrying about what other girls your daughter's age are doing, and start concerning yourself on making sure your daughter is at the level that best fits her well-being. You don't want to rush her into trying-out for a team because her former teammates or friends are trying-out for.
3) Playing With Younger Players: Should be looked at as an opportunity for your daughter to show her leadership skills. Sometimes, your evaluation by a college coach does not consist of just how you play on the floor. Many times, colleges want to see your intangibles: leadership, maturity, body-language, hustle, and teamwork. The irony of having your daughter play with a younger player is that most of the time it would ok for your daughter to play up with older kids, and then forgetting that those older kids are having to play with your younger daughter. If that's ok, it should be ok the other way around too with your daughter being older. Every opportunity is just that, an opportunity and the college coaches will see how you handle that opportunity.
